Castaic Residents File Lawsuit Against Landfill Over Toxic Odors [Castaic, CA]

CASTAIC, CA (May 29, 2024) — Residents near the Chiquita Canyon Landfill in Castaic have filed a mass lawsuit alleging that toxic odors from the landfill are causing serious health problems.
The suit claims that emissions of toxic fumes have led to respiratory issues, headaches, eye irritation, skin problems, and more.
Many locals say they have been forced to stay indoors for over a year, sealing windows and doors to avoid the harmful air. The 639-acre landfill, operated by Chiquita Canyon, LLC, has experienced significant subsurface oxidation since May 2022, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This event has caused increased levels of carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and volatile organics, leading to 6,800 odor complaints in 2023.
Residents are also concerned about leachate, a liquid from landfill waste that contains elevated levels of benzene, a hazardous substance. The EPA has reportedly called the landfill an “imminent and substantial endangerment to nearby communities.”
Over 800 residents are now filing a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the landfill operators. One plaintiff, a mother from Castaic, said her 8-year-old daughter suffers from constant nausea due to the toxins. Those exposed are also concerned about long-term health risks, including cancers and blood disorders.
The Chiquita Canyon toxic landfill lawsuit demands that landfill operations cease and that measures be taken to address the ongoing environmental hazards. This is a developing story.
