LOS ANGELES, CA (July 17, 2024) — Joe Benson, a 65-year-old former homeless man dedicated to helping others, was killed in a hit-and-run accident early Tuesday morning in Downtown Los Angeles.
Benson, sober for 27 years, was well-known for his work as a part-time security guard and substance abuse counselor at a Skid Row housing complex for veterans. He also served as a full-time case manager for Los Angeles County, focusing on homeless and addiction services.
The accident occurred around 3:30 a.m. near Wall Street and Fourth Street, just a few blocks from his apartment. Benson was likely on his way to catch a bus for his job at Olive View. Surveillance footage of the incident is unclear, but a witness reported seeing a white Toyota Camry speeding away from the scene.
Investigators have yet to identify the suspect or vehicle involved in the Joe Benson hit-and-run case. In the meantime, Benson’s friends and colleagues are committed to honoring his memory and continuing his legacy of helping others. He is remembered as someone who lived to make a difference, always smiling and choosing happiness over bitterness.
