Community Rallies for Autistic Boy Assaulted in Pacoima

PACOIMA, CA (July 5, 2024) — Community members in Pacoima have come together to support the Morales family after a troubling incident on July 1, when 10-year-old Alfredo Morales, a boy with autism, was slapped by a man for touching his car.
The incident occurred as Alfredo and his older sister were crossing the street. Alfredo touched the emblem on a Mercedes-Benz, prompting the driver to make a U-turn and follow the siblings to a bus stop. The man then approached Alfredo, who was sitting on a bench, and slapped him. Alfredo’s sister tried to intervene but was unable to stop the assault.
A bystander captured the incident on a cell phone, and the video has since gone viral on social media, leading to widespread outrage. The community has rallied around the Morales family, who are currently homeless and living in an inoperable truck. A GoFundMe page has been set up to seek support.
On July 4, local housing officials met with the Morales family to discuss support options. The Morales family has filed a police report and is seeking justice for Alfredo. The male driver involved in the incident has been identified but was out of town when contacted for a statement.
