Construction Worker Killed in Scripps Ranch Trench Accident

SAN DIEGO, CA (August 28, 2024) — A construction worker tragically lost their life Wednesday morning at a water construction site in Scripps Ranch after being crushed by dirt and a pipe at the bottom of a trench.
The incident happened around 4 a.m. on Hoyt Park Drive near Scripps Ranch Boulevard, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials.
The worker was reportedly 20 feet down in the trench when the accident occurred. A co-worker who was also in the trench at the time managed to escape. Emergency crews arrived quickly but determined that the worker had already passed away. Authorities believe an unstable foundation caused the 4-foot-wide concrete pipe to fall on the worker.
Efforts are underway to recover the worker’s body using special equipment. Cal/OSHA officials have begun their investigation into the Scripps Ranch trench accident.
