Contra Costa Pursuit Ends in Fiery Crash on I-80
CONTRA COSTA, CA (August 31, 2024) — Multiple vehicles were engulfed in flames following a crash on Interstate 80 in Richmond near the San Pablo border on Friday night. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. after Contra Costa County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop a suspected stolen Hummer.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the driver accelerated and led deputies on a pursuit, which was terminated when the suspect began driving in the wrong direction. Approximately 30 seconds later, a sheriff’s helicopter reported that the suspect’s vehicle had collided with two other cars on I-80.
The suspect in this Contra Costa crash was taken into custody and later booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on charges including felony evading, hit-and-run, vehicle theft, and drug possession. Two adults and a juvenile in one of the vehicles struck by the suspect were transported to local hospitals. Their conditions remain unknown as of Saturday afternoon.
