Deadly Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-80 Triggers Fire, Shuts Down Freeway

SACRAMENTO, CA (August 22, 2024) — A deadly multi-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 80 in south Natomas, Sacramento, on Monday led to several vehicles catching fire and a complete freeway closure. The collision reportedly happened around 4:30 p.m. between the West El Camino exit and the Interstate 5 interchange.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a pickup truck driver failed to notice stopped traffic and rear-ended another vehicle. This triggered a chain reaction involving three additional vehicles.
The impact caused the first three vehicles to become fully engulfed in flames. The driver of the vehicle initially rear-ended died at the scene, while the pickup truck driver sustained minor injuries. Another individual involved in the crash suffered major injuries.
