Driver On Trial for Fatal Lamont Crash That Killed 3
BAKERSFIELD, CA (February 14, 2024) — The aftermath of a devastating Lamont car crash that resulted in the tragic loss of three lives last November continues to unfold in Kern County. Jose De Jesus Velazquez-Gomez faces serious charges, including three counts of second-degree murder and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, after his Jeep collided with an SUV carrying Gabina Santiago De Arias, Darli Santiago, and Yolanda Godinez, who were en route to work.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that Velazquez-Gomez was under the influence of methamphetamine and alcohol at the time of the accident. Despite defense claims that Velazquez-Gomez had merely fallen asleep, the impact of his actions resonates deeply with the victims’ families, who are grappling with their loss and the quest for justice.
Elias Mateo, related to one of the victims, emphasized the importance of making responsible choices, urging drivers to avoid driving while fatigued or under the influence. The case has become a poignant reminder for the Kern County community about the deadly consequences of impaired driving.
