Driver Rescued After Car Plunges Down Embankment in Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (April 16, 2024) — A dramatic rescue happened in Newport Beach Tuesday morning after a vehicle veered off San Joaquin Hills Road and plummeted 120 feet down an embankment.
The Newport Fire Department responded quickly, finding the driver trapped inside the vehicle near the intersection of San Joaquin Hills Road and Spy Glass Hill Road.
The Orange County Fire Authority was instrumental in the rescue, using a helicopter for a hoist operation to safely lift the driver from the ravine. The driver, reported as stable, managed to walk with assistance to a litter basket, which was used for the airlift to the hospital.
The cause of the Newport Beach car accident is still being investigated.
