DUI Suspect Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on Interstate 8 Near El Cajon

SAN DIEGO, CA (August 26, 2024) — A 49-year-old Lakeside woman died early Sunday morning in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 8 near Grossmont High School, authorities reported Monday.
The collision happened around 12:45 a.m. when the woman’s 2021 Kia K5, traveling eastbound on the westbound side of the freeway, collided with a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado near El Cajon Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The woman died at the scene, and her name has been withheld pending notification of her family.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 34-year-old El Cajon man, sustained moderately serious injuries and was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego for treatment, CHP Officer Jared Grieshaber stated. Preliminary evidence suggests that the woman was intoxicated at the time of the El Cajon wrong-way crash, according to the CHP.
