East Bakersfield Family Struggles After Teen Crashes SUV into Home

BAKERSFIELD, CA (April 22, 2024) — A peaceful Saturday night abruptly turned chaotic for Lofa Hubbard and her family when a speeding teenager drove an SUV into their garage in East Bakersfield. The crash occurred around 9 p.m. on April 20, at their home on Oswell Street near Alloway Lane.
“We just heard this big old boom,” Hubbard said, initially thinking someone was breaking into their house. Her daughter and neighbors quickly alerted her that a Chevy Tahoe had smashed through their garage. The teenage driver fled the scene but returned later with his parents.
The SUV crash into a Bakersfield home not only damaged the structure but also led to a suspected gas leak, prompting the fire department to shut off the gas. Code Enforcement has since deemed the building at risk of collapse, cut off the electricity, and removed essential utilities like the washer and dryer.
“We had no power all night, and everything in our refrigerator was off, so I’m trying to find out a way to save our food,” Hubbard explained, noting that a change in her routine to do laundry potentially saved her from being in the vehicle’s path.
The incident has left the Hubbards dealing with the loss of not only their home’s functionality but also precious belongings and mementos from deceased relatives, which are now destroyed or severely damaged.
Faced with uncertainty about legal proceedings, Hubbard mentioned, “I’m not sure if I should take them to small claims court. I need to do some research and figure out what my next steps are.”
