Elderly Man Assaulted, Piedmont Police Chief Involved in Arrest of Suspect

SANTA ANA, CA (April 28, 2024) — A violent incident unfolded in Piedmont on Friday, leading to the arrest of 42-year-old Willie Gomer after he attacked an elderly man and later struggled with the city’s police chief. The assault occurred before 4:23 p.m. at a hardware store on 1221 Grand Avenue, where Gomer allegedly struck an elderly man from behind, rendering him unconscious.
Following the attack, Gomer fled the scene but was soon encountered by police, who described him as uncooperative. He resisted arrest, prompting officers to use pepper spray and a Taser.
The confrontation escalated when Gomer forced his way into a nearby home, threatening another resident, and then attempted to steal the police chief’s car. A physical struggle ensued, involving the chief and other law enforcement personnel, eventually leading to Gomer’s arrest.
The elderly victim was urgently transported to a hospital; his current condition remains undisclosed. Additionally, one officer sustained injuries during the incident.
Gomer faces multiple charges including assault with great bodily injury, elder abuse, battery of a police officer, and robbery, among others.
