Family Mourns After Father Killed in Newport Beach Hit-and-Run

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (July 20, 2024) — A Newport Beach family is grieving after Roman Lizaola-Montano was killed in a hit-and-run earlier this week.
Newport Beach Police Department officers responded to a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian at North Jamboree Road and Sea Vista Drive on July 16 at 9:39 p.m.
According to a police press release, the driver of a silver Toyota Camry fled the scene northbound without stopping to help. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but Lizaola-Montano was declared dead at the scene.
The driver, Jesus A. Bartolo, 30, of Santa Ana, was located less than half a mile away near Jamboree and Santa Barbara Drive and taken into custody. Lizaola-Montano’s daughter, Tandra, shared that her father was walking to a bus stop after his shift at a local Pavilions grocery store when the incident occurred.
“This was very unexpected and tragic. My father was a loving father of three children, very hard-working, and he worked at a Pavilion store where all his coworkers shared that he was greatly loved and cared for,” said Tandra in a GoFundMe post.
“His untimely death has left our family in shock and mourning. The immense pain and emptiness that my siblings and I are feeling is indescribable. We are devastated by this senseless loss and are seeking comfort and justice in this difficult time.”
The GoFundMe has been established to assist the family with funeral expenses. Anyone with information about the Newport Beach hit-and-run is asked to contact Newport Beach Police Department Detective A. Laverty at 949-644-3747.
