Family of 12-Year-Old Killed in Mission Bay Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit [San Diego, CA]

MISSION BAY, CA (June 21, 2024) — The family of Savannah Peterson, a 12-year-old girl who died in a paddleboarding accident in Mission Bay last summer, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the man accused of hitting her with a Jet Ski and several other entities.
Savannah was killed in July 2023 when Arsanyous Ghaly, 19, allegedly ran over her while traveling at 50 mph in a 5 mph zone. Ghaly faces charges of felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and has pleaded not guilty.
The lawsuit, filed nearly a year after the incident, names 10 defendants, including Ghaly, the Jet Ski owners, the City and County of San Diego, the State of California, the San Diego Unified Port District, and Offer Up, the platform allegedly used to rent the Jet Skis. It claims that Ghaly and others involved were not properly trained and lacked a California Boater’s Card.
Ghaly, who was stopped for reckless operation minutes before the crash, faces up to six years in prison if convicted. A jury trial is set for November 4.
