Fatal Bicycle Accident Near Andrew Hill High School
SAN JOSE, CA (May 8, 2024) — A tragedy occurred on Tuesday morning near Andrew Hill High School in San Jose, where a bicyclist was killed following a major traffic accident. According to the San Jose Police Department (SJPD), the crash happened just before 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Senter Road and E. Capitol Expressway.
A red Chevy Silverado, speeding westbound, ran a red light and struck the bicyclist. The vehicle then collided with a northbound white Ford F-150 pickup truck, which had the green light at the time. SJPD Sgt. Jorge Garibay reported, “The bicyclist sustained major injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
The driver of the red Chevy attempted to flee on foot but was detained by a good Samaritan until police arrived. The suspect was found to be in possession of a privately manufactured firearm and was taken into custody. The driver of the white Ford sustained injuries but survived the crash.
The Andrew Hill High School bicycle accident marks the 17th traffic-related death in San Jose for the year 2024. The East Side Union High School District confirmed that no students were involved in the accident.
The crash led to significant traffic disruptions, with multiple road closures lasting about five hours as police conducted a large-scale investigation.
