Fatal Crash Ends Police Chase in Moreno Valley
MORENO VALLEY, CA (March 30, 2024) — A tragic end to a high-speed police pursuit in Moreno Valley resulted in the death of a 19-year-old passenger, with two others sustaining serious injuries.
The police chase in Moreno Valley unfolded in the early hours of Thursday, March 28, when a California Highway Patrol officer noticed a Kia K900 running a red light at Perris and Sunnymead boulevards, its headlights off.
Despite attempts to stop the vehicle, the 19-year-old driver, identified as Steven Israel Corona of Moreno Valley, escalated the situation by accelerating to speeds of 90 mph, weaving recklessly through the streets. The pursuit culminated on Gentian Avenue when Corona lost control, slamming into two parked vehicles.
The impact trapped the passengers inside the wreck until they were extricated and rushed to Riverside University Medical Center. Among them, Villalon Ramirez, also 19 and from Moreno Valley, succumbed to his injuries. The other passengers’ injuries were severe but not life-threatening.
Corona faces charges including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony evading with great bodily injury. After posting a $250,000 bond, he was released from jail Thursday afternoon.
