Fatal Crash in Hollister: Vehicle Hits Light Pole and Catches Fire
HOLLISTER, CA (July 11, 2024) — Hollister police have reported a fatal incident involving a vehicle that crashed into a light pole on Pinnacles National Park Highway at the intersection of Hillcrest Road on Tuesday evening. The crash occurred around 9:10 p.m., drawing multiple emergency calls and a gathering crowd as the vehicle caught fire.
Responders from the Hollister Police Department, Hollister Fire Department, American Medical Response, and the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office were at the crash scene. Upon arrival, authorities found the vehicle wrapped around a traffic light pole, with the adult male driver trapped inside.
He was pronounced dead on site. Witnesses informed the police that the vehicle had been traveling at high speeds, estimated between 75 and 100 miles per hour, heading south on Highway 25 from Gilroy before the accident.
The fatal crash in Hollister happened when the speeding vehicle, facing a red light at the intersection, was hit from behind by a westbound vehicle on Hillcrest Road. This impact caused the vehicle to spin sideways and crash into the pole. The area, including southbound Highway 25 from Meridian Street to Park Street and Hillcrest Road from Industrial Drive to Highway 25, was closed until 12:15 a.m. following the accident.
The identity of the deceased will be released by the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office after next of kin have been notified. It remains unclear if the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash. Hollister police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of this tragic event.
