Fatal Crash on State Route 78 in Oceanside Leaves One Dead, One Injured

OCEANSIDE, CA (July 14, 2024) — A vehicle veered off eastbound State Route 78 in Oceanside on Saturday morning, resulting in one fatality and one serious injury, according to authorities.
The Oceanside crash occurred shortly before 9:50 a.m. after the College Boulevard exit, as per a SigAlert from the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Aerial footage shows the vehicle in pieces in the parking lot of an ampm convenience store at 3804 Plaza Dr.
The Oceanside Fire Department, along with several police units, responded to the scene. Officials confirmed that the vehicle had traveled through a homeless encampment, but no injuries were reported from the encampment.
Two individuals were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. Their current condition is unknown.
San Diego County HazMat was called to monitor for any hazardous materials due to the proximity to a gas station. Fire officials confirmed the area was free from any immediate threat. The CHP is conducting the investigation.
