Fatal Explosion on SR-247: Propane Truck and Vehicle Collide

LUCERNE VALLEY, CA (July 16, 2024) — A devastating head-on collision on State Route 247 near Rattlesnake Road in Lucerne Valley led to a fatal explosion on Monday afternoon. The incident, which happened around 2:30 pm, involved a passenger vehicle and a Ferrellgas truck carrying propane tanks. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the severe impact caused several propane canisters to explode and both vehicles to catch fire.
San Bernardino County firefighters, upon arriving, discovered the passenger vehicle fully engulfed in flames and multiple propane tanks from the truck exploded. Two individuals were rushed to a trauma center, while one person was pronounced dead at the scene. A representative from Ferrellgas was also present to assist with securing the remaining tanks and addressing any potential leaks.
State Route 247 remains closed in both directions as authorities manage the scene, with traffic being redirected through alternate desert routes.
