Fatal Pedestrian Crash on Hwy. 99 Prompts Investigation
MODESTO, CA (April 18, 2024) — A tragic incident occurred on Highway 99 near Modesto when a man was fatally struck by a car on Tuesday, reports the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The accident happened around 3:30 p.m. near Hatch Road as the man attempted to cross from the east shoulder to the center median while pushing a bicycle.
Authorities say the man entered the path of a northbound Volvo sedan, leading to the deadly collision. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Volvo was unharmed.
Following the Modesto pedestrian crash, two lanes of Highway 99 were closed to facilitate an initial investigation, which remains underway. CHP has not determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.
