Fatal Wrong-Way Collision on I-5 Claims Two Lives in Chula Vista
CHULA VISTA, CA (April 11, 2024) — A devastating collision resulted in the deaths of two individuals early Wednesday on Interstate 5 near Palomar Street in Chula Vista.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the incident involved a wrong-way driver who collided head-on with another vehicle.
Reports from CHP indicate that at around 3 a.m., multiple 911 calls were made about a driver speeding in the wrong direction. Within minutes, a Honda Civic driven by a 67-year-old San Diego woman entered the southbound I-5 incorrectly and traveled six miles before striking a Dodge Challenger operated by a 16-year-old from Imperial Beach.
The impact caused the Dodge to catch fire and become fully engulfed in flames. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene, trapped within their vehicles. The identities of the deceased are currently withheld as family notifications are pending.
Authorities are awaiting a toxicology report to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a part in the Chula Vista car crash. Traffic on southbound I-5 was significantly affected for hours as investigations continued.
