Fire Engulfs Downtown LA Fashion District Building [Los Angeles, CA]

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 5, 2024) — Early Friday morning, a huge fire broke out at a commercial building in the Fashion District of downtown Los Angeles, prompting a response from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). The incident occurred in the 1400 block of South Main Street and was reported at approximately 5:10 a.m.

By 7 a.m., the LAFD had escalated the situation to a major emergency, the highest level of response due to the fire’s intensity and the potential threat to surrounding areas. The building, a wholesale t-shirt manufacturing and distribution company, contained large quantities of materials that fueled the flames, producing thick smoke visible for miles.

David Ortiz, LAFD’s Public Information Officer, told local news agencies that about 120 firefighters were deployed. “Initial attempts at an aggressive interior attack were hindered by the volume of material inside, forcing crews to shift to a defensive strategy,” Ortiz reportedly explained. 

Fortunately, efforts to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjacent buildings were successful.

As of now, there have been no injuries reported among civilians or firefighters. The cause of the LA Fashion District fire is still under investigation.
