Firefighter Matthew Nichols in Coma After Orange County Crash

IRVINE, CA (September 26, 2024) — A firefighter is in a coma after a rollover crash involving a fire truck in Irvine, California, last Thursday. Matthew Nichols was among eight firefighters injured when their truck overturned on the 241 Freeway while returning from a 12-hour shift battling the Airport Fire.
The California Highway Patrol reported that a vehicle ahead swerved to avoid a ladder on the road, prompting the fire truck to do the same. The truck struck a guardrail on the right shoulder and rolled over multiple times. Six of the firefighters sustained critical injuries.
Nichols and his wife have a six-month-old son named Theodore. To help cover child care costs during his recovery, a GoFundMe page has been established for the family.
