Fog and Speed Lead to Highway 58 Crash, Two Injured
BAKERSFIELD, CA (March 2, 2024) — On the morning of February 29, 2024, a severe crash on Highway 58, east of Bussell Road, resulted in hospitalization for two Bakersfield men, underscoring the dangers of fog and speed on roadways.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the incident occurred around 6:24 a.m., involving a sequence of crashes that led to the injuries.
A 66-year-old man, after being involved in an initial accident, had stopped his 2001 Toyota Rav4 in the westbound lane to assess the damage. While outside his vehicle, another car, driven by a fellow 66-year-old from Bakersfield in a Subaru, approached at approximately 60 mph.
The Subaru driver, hindered by patchy fog and traveling at a speed unsafe for the conditions, collided with the Toyota, causing significant injuries to the man outside his vehicle.
Both individuals were transported to Kern Medical to receive care for their injuries. The California Highway Patrol has clarified that neither alcohol nor drugs were contributing factors in the crash.
