High-Speed Pursuit Ends in Fiery Crash in San Diego, Officer and Suspect Killed

SAN DIEGO, CA (August 27, 2024) – A San Diego police officer and a suspect were killed late Monday night after a high-speed pursuit ended in a fiery crash in Clairemont Mesa East, according to Police Chief Scott Wahl. Another officer involved in the crash sustained critical injuries and is currently hospitalized.
The incident happened just after 11:30 p.m. on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard when a vehicle, speeding in the wrong direction, collided with a patrol car carrying two officers. The pursuit had been called off by a supervisor shortly before the crash. The officer driving the patrol car and the suspect both died at the scene, while the second officer is “fighting for his life,” Chief Wahl reported.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash in San Diego, including reconstructing the events leading up to it. Identities of those involved have not been released, pending family notification.
