LA Scrap Yard Charged for Allegedly Dumping Hazardous Waste on School

LOS ANGELES, CA (September 27, 2024) — Atlas Iron and Metal Corp, a Los Angeles recycling facility, has been indicted on 25 counts for allegedly dumping hazardous waste onto a neighboring school in Watts, prosecutors announced Thursday. District Attorney George Gascón said the charges include an incident involving an explosion at the scrap yard last month.
“We will hold companies accountable when they endanger our communities,” Gascón reportedly stated. The owners pleaded not guilty and are scheduled to return to court on October 28.
Residents have long complained about the facility, claiming that debris and toxic chemicals have affected Jordan High School next door. The Los Angeles Unified School District reported dangerously high levels of lead and other metals on the campus, far exceeding Environmental Protection Agency standards.
In 2021, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office sued Atlas Iron and Metal, alleging that metal fragments from the facility had landed on the school’s grounds multiple times. An explosion on August 12 renewed concerns, sending smoke into the air just before students returned from summer break.
