LA Votes on Transformative Road Safety Measure HLA [Los Angeles, CA]

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 1, 2024) — LA residents have a critical decision to make in Tuesday’s primary election with Measure HLA on the ballot, aiming to drastically reduce traffic fatalities. 

Known as Healthy Streets LA, this Los Angeles road safety initiative proposes the implementation of Mobility Plan 2035, featuring sidewalk expansions, protected bike and bus lanes, and traffic calming measures to enhance road safety.

Supporter Brooke Rios, an educator, shares alarming observations of students and families dodging traffic hazards on routes to school, emphasizing the dire need for improved infrastructure on notorious corridors like Washington and Venice Boulevards.

With a staggering 337 deaths and over 1,500 severe injuries from crashes recorded in 2023, the highest in Los Angeles history, city officials and council members back the measure as a necessary step towards safer streets. Despite concerns over the estimated $3.1 billion cost, proponents argue the investment is critical for public safety.
