LAPD Detective Charged with Hit-and-Run on 5 Freeway

lapd detective hit and run

LOS ANGELES, CA (May 4, 2024)Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has officially charged an off-duty LAPD detective with a hit-and-run offense related to an incident that occurred on the 5 Freeway last year.

Detective Stephanie Carrillo, a 24-year veteran of the force, was allegedly involved in a collision on May 3, 2023, where she rear-ended another vehicle and subsequently fled the scene.

After the collision, Detective Carrillo and the other driver initially pulled over. However, according to the District Attorney’s office, Carrillo returned to her unmarked police vehicle and left the scene without fulfilling legal obligations. She later reported the incident as a hit-and-run at the California Highway Patrol San Juan Capistrano station in Orange County.

The delay in charges, which comes exactly a year after the incident, aligns with the statute of limitations for misdemeanors in California, which is one year. Carrillo faces up to six months in county jail if convicted. Her arraignment is scheduled for May 22 at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles.

The LAPD has expressed its cooperation with the District Attorney’s office as the case progresses. This LAPD detective hit-and-run incident has prompted discussions on accountability and protocol within the department, especially concerning off-duty conduct of its officers.
