Lead Contamination Found in Watts Tap Water – Study

WATTS, CA (August 22, 2024) — A recent study has detected lead in the tap water of Los Angeles’ Watts neighborhood, raising serious health concerns. Commissioned by the Better Watts Initiative, the study highlights lead contamination in samples from both single-family homes and public housing units with outdated plumbing.
The findings confirm long-standing fears among residents and activists. “We’ve been pushing for a water quality study for years,” said Thelmy Alvarez of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee. “It’s unacceptable that it took so long for this essential research to happen.”
Scientist Danielle Hoague, who worked on the study, reportedly warned of the dangers of lead exposure, stating, “No level of lead is safe. It poses risks of cognitive damage, aggressive behaviors, ADHD, and kidney issues.” Some water samples exceeded 15 parts per billion, well above the Environmental Protection Agency’s goal of zero.
Health experts emphasize that pregnant women and children are particularly vulnerable. In response, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass reportedly pledged immediate action, including additional water testing and coordination with federal agencies to address the lead in Watts tap water contamination.
