Man Arrested in Fairfield Car Chase, Fleeing Police After Being Caught Sleeping at the Wheel

FAIRFIELD, CA (February 27, 2024) — Early Saturday morning, Fairfield police apprehended a man who attempted to evade arrest after being found asleep at the wheel. The incident began when police were alerted to a vehicle obstructing westbound lanes of Airbase Parkway at Heath Drive around 1:04 a.m.

 

Upon arrival, officers discovered 41-year-old Dontae Jones asleep in a running vehicle positioned in drive. When roused, Jones refused to comply with instructions to secure the vehicle and initiated a brief pursuit with police, which was subsequently called off due to the danger posed by high speeds.

 

Jones’s escape continued onto westbound Interstate 80, concluding when he stopped on the Travis Boulevard off-ramp, abandoned his vehicle, and attempted to flee on foot. During his flight, Jones discarded a DoorDash bag, which was later found to contain marijuana intended for sale.

 

The coordinated efforts of California Highway Patrol, the Solano County Sheriff’s Office, and Vacaville’s K-9 unit led to Jones’s capture while hiding in a restaurant restroom on Holiday Lane.  He faces charges of DUI, felony evasion, and marijuana sales.
