Man Dies After High-Speed Chase Ends in Crash in Rancho Murieta

RANCHO MURIETA, CA (August 1, 2024) — A man driving a Hyundai died following a high-speed chase that ended in a crash in Rancho Murieta on Wednesday.
The crash, which also injured four others, occurred around 8:15 p.m. on Monday near Jackson Road and Murieta Parkway, according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.
The incident began when officers attempted to stop a speeding Hyundai Elantra in Amador County just before 8 p.m. The driver did not yield, leading to a pursuit that continued onto Highway 49 and westbound Highway 16 into Sacramento County, eventually reaching Murieta Parkway. The Hyundai was later confirmed to be stolen.
The Hyundai, driven by a man at approximately 80 mph, collided with a Rivian RS1 driven by a woman on Murieta Parkway. The impact caused the Hyundai to catch fire. A CHP officer rescued the driver and a female passenger from the burning vehicle. Both sustained major injuries and were transported to a hospital, where the driver later died. His identity has not been released.
The driver and two passengers in the Rivian, a man and a woman, suffered moderate injuries and were also taken to a hospital. The crash in Rancho Murieta remains under investigation.
