Mudslides Force PCH and Malibu Road Closures [Los Angeles, CA]

LOS ANGELES, CA (February 22, 2024) — A significant mudslide has led to the ongoing closure of a key section of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), with efforts to reopen the road continuing into Wednesday. 

 

The slide, which occurred Tuesday, has blocked the highway with mud and left large boulders on the cliff’s edge, prompting a shutdown from Latigo Canyon Road to Corral Canyon Road, as reported by Caltrans District 7 on X.

 

Local resident Nicole Humphreys expressed her understanding of the Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Road closures after witnessing the mudslide, emphasizing the necessity of the action for safety reasons. 

 

Overnight, crews have been working diligently, utilizing heavy machinery, cherry pickers, and hand tools to clear the debris and secure the cliffside. Limited passage was facilitated by Caltrans on Wednesday, but the future of this temporary measure remains uncertain.

 

Additionally, a second mudslide on Wednesday has closed Malibu Canyon Road, a vital route to Pepperdine University, potentially for several days. The slide has affected the road in both directions between Piuma and Francisco Ranch roads.
