SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA – Two drivers sustained major injuries in a head-on crash near Cuesta Grade on Thursday morning during a rainstorm.
The collision reportedly occurred at about 6:44 a.m. on Highway 101 when Gary Brennan, driving a Toyota Tundra northbound, attempted a left turn at Stage Coach Road into the path of Jerell Cryer, who was driving a Chevrolet Silverado 3500 southbound. Cryer was unable to avoid the crash, and his vehicle struck the right side of Brennan’s truck.
The impact caused the Silverado to roll over, spilling approximately 75 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway. The crash near Cuesta Grade blocked the southbound lanes of the highway, and both drivers were trapped in their vehicles. Fire department personnel rescued them, and they were transported to Adventist Health Sierra Vista hospital with major injuries.
Traffic remained stalled through the morning commute until it resumed at around 11:30 a.m. The California Highway Patrol stated that alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash. Head-on collisions, particularly in wet conditions, remain a major concern on California highways. Drivers are encouraged to remain cautious and aware of their surroundings, especially during adverse weather conditions, to prevent accidents and ensure road safety.
