SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Six people were injured when a car crashed into a parklet in San Francisco’s Mission District on Sunday afternoon. The incident happened around 3:45 p.m. at the intersection of 24th Street and S Van Ness Avenue, just as the Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles was beginning.
Initially, two victims were reported to be in critical condition, while the other four were said to have moderate injuries. However, the San Francisco Police Department later confirmed that all six victims had sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Video footage captured the aftermath of the Mission District crash, which occurred outside The Napper Tandy, an Irish sports bar and grill. The owner of the bar expressed frustration with the ongoing crime in the area, citing two crashes at the pub in the past two years.
The crash was preceded by a police chase, which reportedly started around 3:05 p.m. when officers attempted to stop a suspect vehicle six miles away from the crash site. After the suspect vehicle fled, it ultimately collided with the parklet in the Mission District. Two women inside the vehicle were arrested.
Mayor Daniel Lurie has expressed awareness of the situation and is in contact with both SFPD and SFFD, offering his well wishes for the victims’ recovery.
