MERCED, CA – A 17-year-old driver died after crashing into a canal in Merced County on Saturday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 7 p.m. on Snelling Road, south of Youd Road. Authorities say the teenager veered off the roadway and into the water, submerging the vehicle. Emergency crews pulled the driver and a passenger from the canal, and both were transported to a hospital.
The driver succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, while the condition of the passenger remains unknown.
CHP has not determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the Merced car crash.
