FRESNO, CA – A person was killed Tuesday evening in downtown Fresno after being struck by an Amtrak train, authorities confirmed.
The collision happened around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Santa Fe Avenue and Tulare Street. Amtrak officials stated that Train 716, traveling from Oakland to Bakersfield, hit an individual who was trespassing on the tracks.
There were no reported injuries among the 50 passengers or crew members aboard.
In a statement sent to Fox26 News, Amtrak emphasized the dangers of trespassing on railroad tracks, citing data from the Federal Railroad Administration that identifies it as the leading cause of rail-related deaths in the U.S. The investigation into the Amtrak train collision is ongoing.
