IMPERIAL COUNTY, CA – An off-road vehicle crash in the Glamis Sand Dunes on Saturday afternoon left one person dead and two others injured, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) El Centro Office.
The accident happened around 2:54 p.m. in the Glamis Off-Highway Recreational Area, when a 56-year-old man driving a 2005 Sand Rail collided with a 2007 Sand Rail under unclear circumstances.
The impact was fatal for the 56-year-old driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Imperial County Coroner’s Office is notifying his family before releasing his identity.
The 62-year-old driver of the 2007 Sand Rail sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center. A 12-year-old passenger in the same vehicle suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.
Authorities confirmed that all individuals involved were wearing safety restraints at the time of the Glamis Sand Dunes accident. The CHP continues to investigate and urges off-road enthusiasts to remain vigilant while navigating recreational areas.
