A high-speed pursuit through Victorville on Tuesday afternoon ended in a crash that left an innocent bystander hospitalized, authorities reported.
The chase began around 3:45 p.m. when San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies spotted a stolen vehicle near Seneca and El Evado roads. The driver, later identified as 27-year-old Joel Maldonado of Las Vegas, refused to stop, leading deputies on a pursuit at high speeds.
The high-speed chase in Victorville came to an abrupt end at the intersection of U.S. Highway 395 and Main Street, where Maldonado collided with a 2020 Kia. The driver of the Kia was taken to the hospital, though their condition remains unknown.
After the crash, Maldonado attempted to flee on foot but was quickly caught and arrested. He faces multiple charges, including grand theft auto, reckless evasion, and hit-and-run causing injury. His bail was set at $50,000 as he awaits a court appearance.
