
CONTRA COSTA, CA – A fatal incident at the El Cerrito Plaza BART station Tuesday morning led to a nearly three-hour shutdown, affecting train service in the area, transit officials confirmed.
According to a BART spokesperson, a person entered the trackway and was struck by an oncoming train. Preliminary findings did not indicate foul play.
The station was closed at 8:40 a.m., with service to El Cerrito Plaza, El Cerrito del Norte, and Richmond stations suspended during the emergency response. Trains turned around at North Berkeley station while officials worked at the scene. AC Transit provided bus service between affected stations to assist stranded commuters.
The station was cleared for reopening just before 11:30 a.m., restoring normal operations across the impacted routes. The identity of the person killed by train at El Cerrito has not been revealed. The investigation is ongoing.
