An Oakdale woman was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI after crashing her SUV into an irrigation canal late Tuesday night, resulting in the death of her 4-year-old daughter.
The DUI crash in Oakdale happened around 11 p.m. at Canal Bank and Arlberg roads. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), 26-year-old Juliette Acosta was driving a Subaru SUV south on Arlberg Road when she veered off the roadway, sideswiping a wooden telephone pole before crossing Canal Bank Road and plunging into the water.
A Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputy entered the canal to rescue the child, who was transported to a hospital but later died from her injuries. Acosta was unhurt in the crash. Her uncle, who lives nearby, reportedly pulled her from the vehicle and assisted in the effort to save her daughter.
Officers determined that Acosta showed signs of intoxication at the scene. She was taken into custody and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on suspicion of felony DUI. The investigation continues.
