A Garden Grove family has filed a lawsuit against Six Flags Magic Mountain, alleging that the park’s roller coaster, X2, caused a fatal brain injury to 22-year-old Christopher Hawley.
Court documents state that on June 23, 2022, Hawley rode X2 alone while his younger brother and cousin sat behind him, per The OC Register. As the ride neared its end, it abruptly came to a stop, and Hawley reportedly experienced a severe jolt.
He later collapsed and was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia, where a CT scan revealed a catastrophic right subdural hematoma. Hawley died the following day.
The lawsuit accuses the theme park of negligence, citing a design defect and a failure to warn riders of the ride’s potential dangers.
The legal team is seeking $10 million in compensatory damages and a trial is set for October 13. Six Flags Magic Mountain has yet to comment on the pending litigation.
