A 36-year-old man riding an electric bicycle was fatally struck in a hit-and-run crash in Clairemont Mesa East neighborhood of San Diego early Saturday morning.
The incident happened at approximately 1:25 a.m. in the 6900 block of Balboa Avenue. The victim was riding west in the bike lane when he veered left into the path of a light-colored Mercedes-Benz E Class sedan traveling in the adjacent lane.
The vehicle sustained significant front-end damage — its grill and other parts missing — before fleeing the scene.
Emergency responders transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Local resident Juan Torres described Balboa Avenue as “pretty dangerous” at night due to high traffic speeds.
Authorities continue to investigate.
