A 9-year-old girl in California died following a dental procedure performed under anesthesia earlier this month, according to information released by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Silvanna Moreno underwent the surgery on March 18 at a dental practice in Vista. The office address corresponds to Dreamtime Dentistry.
Following the procedure, the medical examiner’s office stated that Moreno was moved to a recovery area and subsequently discharged.
A statement from Dr. Ryan Watkins of Dreamtime Dentistry indicated that standard post-anesthesia protocols were followed, and Moreno left the office in stable condition, awake and with stable vital signs.
However, the medical examiner’s report detailed that Moreno remained asleep during the journey home and continued to sleep after being placed in her bed. Family members checked on her later in the day and found her unresponsive.
After a 911 call, paramedics transported her to Rady Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The cause of death is currently under investigation, and Dr. Watkins said the dental office is fully cooperating with authorities.
A funeral for Moreno was held on March 26, according to reports.
