A 12-year-old boy was shot in the head by a stray bullet on Friday at Veterans Memorial Park in Ontario while leaving an after-school program.
Authorities reported that the shooting occurred during a violent argument in the park parking lot when two men, identified as 25-year-old Damian Marquis Berry of Victorville and 35-year-old Anthony Dionte Erwing of Los Angeles, exchanged gunfire.
The victim, seated in the back of his family’s vehicle nearby, was struck by a bullet during the altercation. He was taken to a local trauma center, underwent emergency surgery, and later transferred to a children’s trauma facility for further treatment.
Police have arrested both suspects on attempted murder charges; both have long criminal histories, with Berry reportedly on supervised release and Erwing on probation. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and witness accounts to clarify the events that led to the confrontation. A GoFundMe has been established to support the injured boy and his family.
