A California Highway Patrol officer and a detainee were hospitalized with serious injuries Tuesday after a patrol vehicle was struck during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Placer County.
The crash occurred around Horseshoe Road on the eastbound side of I-80 near Loomis. According to CHP, the officer was inside the patrol car on the south shoulder of the freeway preparing to transport a person off the roadway when a Toyota sedan veered onto the shoulder.
The Toyota struck the CHP vehicle, then continued eastbound before colliding with a tow truck, overturning, and coming to rest upright, officials said.
The officer and the individual in the back of the patrol vehicle were taken to a local hospital with suspected serious injuries. The driver of the Toyota suffered minor injuries. The incident remains under investigation.
