A driver was detained Wednesday evening after a multi-vehicle crash in downtown Riverside left one person dead and six others hospitalized.
The incident happened around 6:15 p.m. along Market Street, between 5th Street and Mission Inn Avenue. According to Riverside police, the driver struck multiple occupied vehicles before attempting to flee the area on foot.
Emergency crews arrived to find one person deceased at the scene. Six additional individuals sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate and were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Authorities did not release the name of the deceased or the suspect driver. Investigators are working to determine what led to the collisions.
Police closed portions of Market Street into the night as the investigation continued.
