PETALUMA, CA — One person lost their life and two others were seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash in Petaluma early Sunday morning on Lakeville Highway, just south of Old Lakeville Road No. 3, according to authorities.
The collision occurred around 5:55 a.m., when a Ford Mustang traveling southbound crossed into the opposite lane while attempting to illegally pass a Toyota Highlander, crossing the double yellow lines. The Mustang collided head-on with a northbound Honda HR-V, causing the Toyota to be struck on its left side and spin off the roadway.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a passenger in the Honda died at the scene due to severe injuries. The driver was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with major injuries.
The Mustang driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, also sustained serious injuries and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Their name has not been released.
No one inside the Toyota Highlander was injured.
Lakeville Highway remained closed for more than four hours while investigators examined the scene and cleared the wreckage.
