An internal investigation within the Elk Grove PD is currently ongoing after a man was found dead while in police custody on Sunday.
The man was arrested Saturday after being reported to be under the influence of cocaine while trying to break into a Chevron gas station office. He struggled for about four to five minutes before officers were able to handcuff the man and put him in restraints. Two officers reportedly sustained minor injuries following the commotion.
On the way to the station, the man suddenly had a medical emergency and had to be removed from the patrol car when the medic arrived. He was later taken to the local hospital and was pronounced dead on Sunday.
The Sacramento District Attorney’s Office is investigating the incident.
