A 14-year-old boy was killed and three other teenagers were seriously injured Saturday night after a stolen vehicle crashed during a police pursuit in Petaluma.
The crash happened around 10:10 p.m. in the 2600 block of Lakeville Highway, according to the Petaluma Police Department. Deputies initially responded to reports of a suspected DUI and observed a Kia Soul swerving into oncoming traffic. When they attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled, prompting a pursuit.
During the chase, the Kia sideswiped another vehicle, lost control, and rolled over near a gas station, ejecting all four occupants.
First responders arrived to find that the occupants—all minors—had been thrown from the vehicle. The 14-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining three teens, ages 15 to 17, were transported to nearby trauma centers with major injuries and are in stable condition, police said.
Investigators later confirmed the Kia had been reported stolen out of Marin County. The 17-year-old driver was found to be under the influence and is expected to face multiple felony charges, including vehicular manslaughter, DUI causing injury or death, and felony evading. He will be booked into juvenile hall upon his release from the hospital.
The identity of the deceased teen has not been released.
