At least four people were killed in a chain-reaction crash that ended in a fiery wreck on the southbound 605 Freeway in Norwalk early Sunday morning.
The collision occurred shortly before 1 a.m. when 26-year-old Iris Salmeron, driving a Kia at high speed, crashed into a Nissan that was stopped in the middle of the freeway. Authorities believe Salmeron was under the influence at the time of the crash.
The Nissan burst into flames upon impact, trapping all four occupants inside. Tragically, all four died at the scene. According to reports, the Nissan had just been involved in a separate collision with a California Highway Patrol vehicle moments before the fatal impact.
Salmeron and her passenger sustained major injuries and were taken to the hospital. Salmeron was later booked into jail on multiple felony charges, including DUI causing injury and DUI causing injury with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher.
The identities of the four victims have not yet been released.
