An 18-year-old woman suffered second- and third-degree burns in a tabletop fire pit explosion during a family gathering earlier this month.
Viana Poggi was making s’mores when the alcohol-fueled pit erupted in a phenomenon known as “fire jetting,” igniting her clothing. A relative pushed her into a nearby pool to extinguish the flames while another family member also sustained minor injuries from the burning liquid.
Emergency crews responded, and Poggi was hospitalized. She is now preparing for a series of surgeries as part of her recovery.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission previously recalled several tabletop fire pit brands, though secondhand units remain on the market. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist with Poggi’s medical expenses.
